Traipsing around Town

Last Friday I had the pleasure of spending a lovely spring day with my Mom & Aunt who were visiting from the colder temps of Ohio. So of course we got out and about around town and did one of our favorite activities - window shopping! I need to do this more often. There are so many local specialty shops that I want to visit.

Some of our stops included ...

The Buttercup on Providence Rd. - I love the fact that this gift & stationery boutique has been in business for over 35 years! And you tell that they've perfected their service and selection. Need a gift? You can find something for anyone here!

The Cubbyhole in Ballantyne (Harris Teeter shopping center) - as I was browsing this store for ... oh about an hour or so :) ... I realized that the majority of their products are unique to this store. You can find things here that are outside the norm of all the other Charlotte gift shops. Two women own this store and they've also been in business for 20+ years.

Zada Jane's in Plaza Midwood - it was gorgeous out so we had to eat outside at Zada Jane's to get our fillin' of fresh organic eats.

Antique Shops in Plaza Midwood - very eclectic and interesting. We didn't buy anything, but a good time was had just poking around.

Salutations in Ballantyne Village - I might as well just go ahead and admit it. I'm seething with bitter jealousy at the cuteness of this stationery shop. It's clean, clutter-free, top of the line products in paper & gift, and I always appreciate the window displays.

Visit with the Log Cabin Ladies

Back in February, I was asked by my neighbor to be a guest speaker at her local club Lower Providence Log Cabin. For those of you who know me well, I'm not much of public speaker. But the friendly and welcoming women from LPLC made me feel right at home. Our agenda for this occasion was to talk about the lost art and etiquette of letter writing. It's so great to hear others talk of the importance in this long-time tradition. One woman even shared a very romantic story of love letters that were passed to and from her passed husband when he was in World War II.

At the end of our visit, I shared this poem that I found online from another letter-writing blogger. It just seemed so appropriate for the occasion.

Elegy for the Personal Letter by Allison Joseph

I miss the rumpled corners of correspondence,

the ink blots and cross-outs that show

someone lives on the other end, a person

whose hands make errors, leave traces.

I miss fine stationery, its raised elegant

lettering prominent on creamy shades of ivory

or pearl grey. I even miss hasty notes

dashed off on notebook paper, edges

ragged as their scribbled messages—

can't write much now—thinking of you.

{DIY} Embossed Stamping

Have you ever wondered what the hype is with the entire aisle of stamps at the craft store? I used to wonder. But now I understand. For us non-artsy types, its an easy way to get creative and crafty with a little drawing that someone else etched into a stamp. Using special embossing powder with the stamp just takes it to a whole new level. Here's my quick tutorial on embossed stamping.

I learned this technique at a PaperSource workshop, which I highly recommend.

Supplies:

Paper

Stamp

Water Stamp Pad (VersaMark is one brand)

Embossing Powder (I used opaque white in my sample)

Heat Embossing Gun

Directions:

1. Press stamp into the watermark stamp pad for a few seconds. Be sure it soaks into the entire stamp.

2. Center stamp on paper and press down firmly for 5 seconds.

3. Sprinkle embossing powder directly on watermark. Don't wait too long between steps 2 and 3, or else your watermark will dry out and won't hold the powder.

4. Shake powder around the area, then tap off excess powder on a separate sheet of paper. Save it because it can be used again on the next one. I always save the powder and it lasts a long time.

5. Turn on embossing gun and hold about 6 inches away from stamped area. Heat the stamp, moving in a circle pattern. Soon you'll see the texture of the stamp change and look shinier. When the entire stamp looks shiny, you are done. Let the page dry.

{DIY} Napkins into Pillow Covers

I'm going to brag about myself for a minute here because I'm quite proud at this little accomplishment. Specifically proud of my creative ingenuity and ability to save a buck AND still get an end result that is quite awesome. Look at what I did!

I took napkins from this World Market linen collection - Autumn Bouquet - and I turned it into .....

THIS!

I made a very simple pillow cover. I swear I'm never buying $30 pillows again. Just keep your pillow inserts and make pillow covers that you change out with the seasons. I know this one is called "Fall Bouquet", but it's going in my bedroom. It's going to look great with my burnt orange duvet cover.

I am going to a 1st birthday party this weekend for my friends little boy Gabe! Since Gabe is growing into such a big 'little' boy, I thought a custom placemat would be a great gift idea for him. A lesson in Social Media & Thoughtfulness

I'm so inspired by a recent blog post by RedSamp called Social Media + Thoughtfulness. As a lover of all things paper, I am an advocate for the old school ways of snail mail and beautiful words on beautiful paper. However ... I love me some Facebook, blog reading, email, text, etc too! But step aside, and think about how these forms of communication are really impacting your relationships. I'm a little sad that many friendships have faded over the years. Sure I might know that my old college roommate is planning a trip to Spain and then be able to see her pictures via Facebok, but I haven't talked to her in years. There's a huge disconnect between knowing what we're up to and actually sharing your emotions and daily happenings through interaction. So I want to challenge each on of you (and myself) to resolve this disconnect in 2011. Take the time to communicate individually and send a thoughtful message. It will pay off and inspire those around you to do the same!

Erin Newkirk at RedStmap, encourages us to step back from our mass distributed "hellos", "Merry Christmas" and "thank yous", and instead address our friends and family on a more one on one basis. No matter what medium you chose for your correspondence, your thoughtfulness and sincerity most comes from the message you are sending. For me, that is one on one communication.

What I have learned from Cougar Town

Who else loves this show? I can't get enough! So here's how Cougar Town is helping me grow as a person and become a happy person on Tuesday nights.

1. There's nothing wrong with drinking wine just because. No occassion needed!
2. White wine has less alcohol than red wine (so she claims). So if you need to do some thinking while you're drinking ... stick with white.
3. Netty Pots are great!
4. Being friends with your parents can be cool.
5. A confidence dance can really help ease the tension. Or just dance for no reason. It makes things better.
6. There's all kinds of cool apps out there. Even an App for an App (it helps you pick an appetizer).
7. Making little guns with your hands is cool and mean many different things in different scenarious.
8. Truth guns (perfect example of #7). When you point your truth guns at someone they absolutely cannot lie to you.

I've always had a huge interest in retail markets. The big Gift & Home Furnishings market in Atlanta starts tomorrow and goes from 1/12 - 1/19. If you need someone to carry things around for you, run errands, suggest great dining options (I used to live in Atlanta!), or whatever ... seriously whatever and anything ....
I'm your girl! I would love to join you simply for the experience of it all.

My qualifications :)
- Currently representing top stationery and gift lines through PaperConcierge. I use various social media outlets to market my products and introduce customers to new trends and party/gifting ideas.
- As a blogger, I follow lots of current trends related to stationery, retail and home decor.
- Experience as a part-time sales associate in a privately owned stationery boutique in Charlotte, NC. I especially enjoyed working with brides and placing large wedding orders.
- Many positions in retail held throughout the years in various part-time positions.

Snowed In 2011!

The Southeast is covered by a wet, but beautiful, blanket of snow today ... followed by some ugly ice coming our way tonight. I'm trying to sit back and really enjoy the extended weekend that mother nature has so kindly blessed us with. Sipping on my stovetop nestle hot cocoa, complimented with a splash (or more!) of Bailey's and marshmallows! Sweatpants, thick knit sweaters, a snowball fight, and not a reason in the world to leave the house.

Thinking I might invite some of the neighbors over to enjoy the cozy sweatpant time, hot adult beverages, and the national championship game tonight. Come on Auburn!

Now, this beautiful photo was not taken by me, but its just too cute not to use while I'm dreaming of a winter wonderland. And my husband has been putting not-so-subtle hints in my ear about wanting to move to the country. It's not really my dream life, but there are some great perks and hominess (is that a word) that I think would be great. One of them being the chance to have a picturesque view like this out my window.

Baking Up A Holiday Storm

How many cookies, cake balls, fudge, etc... can I make in one afternoon? I'm motivated to do a lot, but we'll see how much actually gets done before I give up. Right now I've got my Red Velvet Cake in the oven and I'm preparing for the infamous "Red Velvet Cake Balls". These clever popable desserts came onto the scene Christmas 2007 (that's when I discovered them anyways), from this Bakerella Blog post. I hope mine turn out as good as the pic. This is my 3rd year making them. And I usually do Oreo Balls too. We shall see. I'll take some pics and let you know how much I got done.

Red Velvet Cake Balls

1 box red velvet cake mix (cook as directed on box for 13 X 9 cake)
1 can cream cheese frosting (16 oz.)
1 package chocolate bark (regular or white chocolate)
wax paper

1. After cake is cooked and cooled completely, crumble into large bowl.
2. Mix thoroughly with 1 can cream cheese frosting. (It may be easier to use fingers to mix together, but be warned it will get messy.)
3. Roll mixture into quarter size balls and lay on cookie sheet. (Should make 45-50. You can get even more if you use a mini ice cream scooper, but I like to hand roll them.)
4. Chill for several hours. (You can speed this up by putting in the freezer.)
5. Melt chocolate in microwave per directions on package.
6. Roll balls in chocolate and lay on wax paper until firm. (Use a spoon to dip and roll in chocolate and then tap off extra.)
I also only melt a few pieces of chocolate bark at a time because it starts to cool and thicken. It’s easier to work with when it’s hot.

Hawaii ~ the great food!

One of my favorite things about our trip to Hawaii was the awesome food! I wanted to share the highlights. I'll still be posting a review and details of the trip later. But the food deserves its own spotlight!

#1 - The Pineapples! Once you eat a fresh Hawaiian pineapple it'll ruin you for life :) There are lots of roadside fruit stands selling pineapple and other local fruits, including coconut drinks - looks like a big coconut with a straw jabbed in it.

#2 - Shave Ice! To say that this is a local delicacy seems a little out of proportion, but Hawaiians and tourists alike all LOVE shave ice. Lots of hole in the walls similar to ice cream & smoothie shops line the pedestrian friendly beach loving streets. We stopped for some on our way out of town and it was really good. I got 3 flavors (coconut, mango and pineapple).

#3 - Hula Grill at Whaler's Village (Maui) - great location, great view, toes in the sand, nice service, live music, good food, and very affordable. We ate there twice and tried fish 'n chips, Thai chicken pizza and coconut shrimp. We loved the Chili Pepper Water (it's a light sauce) to dip things in, and ended up buying a bottle to bring home. Here's one pic from a sunset after we came off the beach.

#4 - Kimo's. This steak and seafood restaurant has a prime spot on busy Front Street in Lahaina (Maui), overlooking the harbor. It was already dark when we went, but if you are ever there then consider going to watch the sunset. Since Lahaina is on the western side of Maui, you'll get a great view just like the one above. Food was really good and it felt like a great date night. Definitely save room for the Hula Pie. It's heaven!

#5 - The Gazebo at Napili Beach (Maui) - it's literally a wooden gazebo turned into a small restaurant. After reading great reviews in our guide book, we knew we had to find this place. It's inexpensive and SO worth it. Awesome food, very friendly service and great ocean front view with open air seating. I took a chance and went with the recommended Fried Rice dish on the breakfast menu. Oh my god, I want to find a similar recipe and make this at home! Michael got a Monte Cristo and then ate the rest of my rice! After this lunch, I was surprised our snorkeling didn't turn into us being weighted to the bottom of the ocean by our full bellies! I can't believe it buy we cleaned our plates.

#6 - Buzz's Steakhouse (Kaulua, Oahu) - our friends Heidi and Mitch, who live on Oahu, took us to Buzz's on our first night. This was by far the best meal of our trip! We started our vacation on the right foot with a strong margarita and a calamari steak (to die for!). Michael got a great fish entree and I had an Ahi tuna salad.

#7 - Old Lahaina Luau (Lahaina, Maui) - saved the best for last! We booked our reservations 2 weeks before our trip, and this was for sure a favorite in the whole Hawaii experience. Old Lahaina Luau is known as the best one of the island, and it was very impressive. Definitely go if you're ever there. We sat at a table with 3 other couples. The meal was buffet style, but started with the Imu ceremony (Hawaiian version of a pig roast). I was very surprised that they had an open bar. I don't have much else to compare this luau too - never having been to a traditional luau before - but I can tell you to go based on the fact that we had a fabulous time! Prepare to eat a lot.

#8 - Shrimp Trucks (all over Oahu) - the picture will explain a lot better than words. You can get a whole heaping pile of fresh shrimp and rice for about $12. Not bad. These trucks were scattered about the island. There were a lot on the North Shore side. Giovanni's was a popular one.

Aloha!!! We're back in North Carolina and its so cold here! Hawaii was awesome and I can't wait to post some reviews and pictures later this week. We had such a great time and hopefully can go back some day.

Getting ready to heat up some tea and address our Christmas cards. They came in while we we're gone and I LOVE THEM! I got one of the Twist designs - will post later after my recipients have gotten them first.

As for my dear husband, he was less than thrilled (to say the least) about having a semi-pro photo session. But in the end, he loves the way the pictures turned out. And that what matters the most! A co-worker/friend met us at the park last weekend on an absolutely gorgeous day to take some photos. We were hoping to get something nice to use for our holiday card, but it turned out that we got a ton of great photos, not just one. Here's a little sample.

Fall dinner party pics

Here's my #21 on the bucket list - Have a 'just because' party in the fall. I didn't take as many pictures as I wanted to. I can say that it was a wonderful evening. I did a full menu with 8 people. We used the dining room and china that rarely get used. I even made little placecard settings for each person. The menu consisted of apple and gorgonzola stuffed porkchops, fresh green beans, mashed potatoes, butternut squash soup and pumpkin crunch cake ... and wine of course!

Here's a close up of the table scape. I love these huge pinecones that Michael's grandma sent us from her farm!

Directions for wine cork placecard holders:
1. Cut a flat edge on one side of the cork so it won't roll around.
2. Cut a shallow slit along the top.
3. Slide in the card.

I just found {through another blog} a store called Gus & Ruby Letterpress. Hmm ... Gus & Ruby ... that rings a bell. Like MY Ruby boxer doggie and her bff Gus! And here's a picture of my 'Gus and Ruby' :) While I'm at it, I might as well share the story of how Gus & Ruby became to be friends. It all starts with MySpace, LOL! No, our dogs don't have MySpace pages. Gus' mommy, also named Katie, friended me because we went to the same college and both had boxers. So here we are 2 OU grads, both married, both living in Charlotte, both named Katie, both with boxers, and both have the same car. We met up for a puppy play date and the rest is history!

Open House pics: Mimosas & Monograms

We sipped mimosas. We tasted yummy coffee cake and snacks. We browsed monogrammed items and holiday eye candy. We had lots of fun! Here are some pics from last Sundays Mimosas & Monograms Open House. This was my very first experience hostessing any sort of 'home party'. I learned a lot and had an overall great experience. Thank you to everyone who came out to see what PaperConcierge is all about!

TGIF everyone! I'm really looking forward to my first Open House for PaperConcierge this weekend. I'm calling it "Mimosas & Monograms" ... two of my favorite things! I signed up for a one night class at my local PaperSource to learn Calligraphy! I'm really really excited about it! This post is sure have lots of exclaimation points!!! Here are some beautiful calligraphy pieces that I found. Can't wait to get started! I told my coworkers that I'll probably start writing calligraphy on post-it notes to them to practice, lol!

Healthy Breakfast Cookies

I made breakfast cookies this week by request of my husband. I immediately knew which recipe I would use. Check out the Sullivan's Isle blog for great recipe ideas and for this wonderful step by step instruction for breakfast cookies. Logan is definitely a health nut, but I know she loves loves loves tasty treats. This recipe gets an A+ for both taste and nutrition! I think I might even make some more for our work bake sale. Thanks for sharing Logan :)

Breakfast Cookies

1/2 c Margarine
1 c Firmly Packed Brown Sugar
1 1/2 c Whole Wheat Flour
1 c Oats
2/3 c Wheat Germ
1/2 c Non Fat Dry Milk
2 Egg Whites
1 1/2 c Apple Sauce
1 tsp Baking Soda
1/2 tsp Baking Powder
1 tsp Cinnamon
1/2 tsp Salt
1 c Raisins or Chocolate Chips
1 c Chopped Pecans

Combine all ingredients

Drop by large spoonfuls onto greased cookies sheet

Bake 375 for 11 minutes
Keep in fridge. For added protein spread peanut butter between two to make sandwich.

TGIF everyone! It is a gorgeous day in the Carolinas!! I wish it would only stay this way forever. I'm keeping busy this weekend planning for my first PaperConcierge Open House - I'm calling it "Mimosas & Monograms" ... two of my favorite things :) I'm surrounding myself in holiday goodies already because we have so many awesome holiday photo cards out, it's getting me in the spirit!

30 Before 30 Bucket List:
a few items I'd like to update. I have a lot to finish before 12/12/10! I have 5 things completely done. And 7 things are in progress. I need to get busy!

Bridal Shower - Going to the Chapel

I had the pleasure of co-hostessing a bridal shower for a coworker/friend. Ashley & Ryan were planning a wedding Viva Las Vegas style! The week before their trip to sin city, our office surprised Ashley with a Going to the Chapel themed shower. It turned out awesome, and so much fun!

The shower was full of Vegas fun, complete with monogrammed cupcakes & a custom cupcake tower (courtesy of my create co-hostess), and tables decked out with cards, dice and poker chips. The red, white and black motif worked so well. And I loved the invitation I did to set the theme from the start.

I just saw that Paper Source has their 2011 calendars now! I love my current letterpress calendar (pictured below) that is pinned up on my cubicle wall. It serves multiple purposes. It ads color and interest to my boring beige walls. And keeps me on track too. I will definitely be getting another for 2011!

Fall's finest at a Carolina farm

We spent yesterday out at Grandma Hallie (husbands grandma) 's farm. The day consisted of homemade cookin', a long walk to the pond, outdoor games with nieces & nephews and long talks under a big water oak shade tree. The summer has given way to autumn. The garden is still producing tomatoes, peppers, okra, green beans and the fruit trees are hanging low with the weight of green and red apples.

Let me take a minute to go back to the 'homemade cookin' part. I can't tell this without explaining how many made-from-scratch dishes come from the hands of this 90 year old woman. Most of these dishes can be found every single Sunday, but I'm not giving away the address or else everyone would want to come :) There's biscuits, creamed potatoes, squash and onion casserole, creamed corn, green beans, pickled beats, stewed tomatoes, fried chicken, meatloaf, gizzards & livers, butter beans, pinto beans, homemade applesauce, chocolate pie, banana pudding .... mixed in with other family favorites. Did you get full just thinking of it all? I did.

It's such a simple life during our Sunday visits with family, but no one would trade it for the world. I took some time to gather up garden goodies and some of mother nature's bounty. Along with homegrown veggies, I also brought home acorns, pine cones, and other various nuts that fell to the ground. No worries, I left plenty for the squirrels :) I plan on using my seasonal findings for vase fillers and to add to my fall decor that I've been working on. Pics to come later.

I just need to start out by admitting how close I was to getting McDonald's this morning. I had a coupon and I was ready to turn into the golden arches. But then I remembered by 30 before 30 bucket list. Yesterday I started writing a post update and decided to take on my #26 - No fast food for a month. So today is the start. So instead of McDonalds I went to my favorite local deli and got the Power Breakfast - egg whites, toast, avacado and grits ... although they didn't have grits today so I asked for tomatoes. Doesn't this just look so good. Well it tastes good too, so good that it deserves a picture!

Last night I decided to make Rachel Ray's Baked Cod & Mushy Peas dinner from 30 Minute Meals. The fish was freaking fantastic! But the peas ... ehhh .... we prefer just plain old peas. Michael saw me preparing the peas - blending up mint, then parsley, then adding peas to the blender. He said "What are you doing?!? Don't ruin those perfectly good peas!" LOL! Well, turns out he was right. So next time I'll keep with the recipe for the baked cod and serve with regular peas (I also added mashed potatoes to our meal last night).

Aren't these photo cards so precious? ::: squeeeeaallll ::: Wait a minute ... shouldn't I be saying that about the babies, not the cards? Oh well :) They're both so adorable together! Four years and going strong! A while ago I posted about traditional anniversary gifts. Well, my dear husband just brought me gorgeous red roses at work. So he kept right in line with the 4 year gift, which is fruit or flowers! I bet he didn't even realize :) And now I need to come up with something quickly to return the gratitude.
